Female Rugby Academy

Female Rugby Academy

The Blackpool Sixth Female Rugby Academy have impressively achieved third place in their first ever tournament.

The team recorded a win in their first competitive game in the Rugby League Tournament against Liverpool University and followed this with a win against Chester College to finish third overall.

Head Coach, Paul Moran, believes their achievement is down to the “nucleus of the team being made up of a very strong and supportive group of girls who have shown unbelievable commitment since November in sustaining the college team”.

Due to the commitment of the girls, the future for ladies rugby within Blackpool Sixth looks very promising indeed, they have set the benchmark and proven that they are as fearless as our male squads.

Paul commented, "Since the team started it was always a concern that the girls would be put off by the nature and physicality of the game but the girls have committed themselves immensely and literally thrown themselves into training at every opportunity.”

“On one occasion, which was the worst possible day for training, the pitch was flooded in mud and there were 11 shaking cold female rugby players ready to train. Within an hour they had battered the tackle bags and each other in a really physical session and ended up covered head to foot in mud. I personally think they have showed great commitment to the college and to themselves.”

The Female Rugby Academy team are Hayley Gunson, Rachel Love, Georgie Toft, Ellen Richardson, Becky Lunn, Katie Dufty, Hollie Rigby, Taymar Judge, Hannah Bradford and Gemma Naylor.
