Blackpool Sixth awarded Beacon status
In 2011, Blackpool Sixth Form was granted Beacon status by the Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS). Beacon status recognises organisations that have outstanding practice, are designated as Outstanding by Ofsted and are willing and able to contribute support to other educational organisations.
In June 2009 Ofsted judged Blackpool Sixth Form to be “Outstanding” in their inspection report. Inspectors praised the high and fast improving success rates of the college, its outstanding teaching and learning, its exceptional academic and personal skills development and its outstanding strategic leadership and management.

Principal Felicity Greeves explained the approach which has led to Blackpool Sixth being granted Beacon Status:
"You start with the end in mind. To create a centre for educational excellence you have to put the students at the forefront of everything you do."
Dame Ruth Silver, LSIS Chair, who will present the awards, said:
“All of the Beacon winners are doing a magnificent job in helping learners of all ages to achieve their full potential.
LSIS uses published inspection reports and advice to identify potential candidates for Beacon status. The latest award brings the total number of Beacon providers nationally to 179, and demonstrates the full range and diversity of organisations in the further education and skills sector.
