Outstanding grade for Blackpool Sixth Form College
“Outstanding” - that is the judgement of Ofsted on the Blackpool Sixth Form College in their inspection report published in June 2009.
Inspectors praised the high and fast improving success rates of the College, its outstanding teaching and learning, its exceptional academic and personal skills development and its outstanding strategic leadership and management.
Principal Felicity Greeves said, “This is public recognition of the significant improvements that have taken place in the College and the very hard work and commitment of students and staff.”
Ofsted are full of praise for the teaching and learning which the College provides. They state that, “Teachers are knowledgeable, enthusiastic and have a very good rapport with learners.”
They point to the “high expectations” which all staff have of students and said that staff, “provide extraordinary support both in and outside of classroom activities.”

The inspectors were extremely impressed by the way in which the College “places the learner at the centre of all that they do.” They add that, “learners feel their views are listened to and responded to.”
The College is also praised for the “very safe and welcoming environment” which it has created for its learners. The College’s excellent facilities are also seen as a key part of its success. The second phase of its exciting re-development programme is completed this week and features a state-of-the-art Visual Arts and Media centre.
The College is seen as providing “a very responsive curriculum” which “engages and matches learner aspirations.” The College has transformed its course range in recent years, in line with the strategies and aspirations of local secondary schools. It introduced 17 BTEC Courses, which can be studied as single, double or triple awards and combined with AS and A levels. At the same time it has created a special pathway for its most gifted students. This programme allows students to deepen their subject knowledge as well building confidence and presentation skills. This has helped secure a large increase in students holding offers to Oxford, Cambridge and other highly selective universities.

The College has focused increasingly on the destinations of its students. In an area where the majority of students have no family experience of Higher Education, the College sees it as essential that it broadens their horizons and helps them believe they can realise their dreams.
A significant number of Aimhigher projects in conjunction with schools, the local authorities and North West universities plus careful monitoring by senior managers has increased HE applications to over 90%. Ofsted describe this as “excellent.” Students who do not wish to progress to University are also well catered for with the “outstanding” advice, guidance and support which is on offer.
The inspectors also acknowledge the key role which the College was playing in the community: “Partnership working is excellent and very supportive of the regeneration of Blackpool.”
