Star-studded success for Blackpool Sixth students in 2011
Blackpool Sixth Form is celebrating an excellent set of A level and BTEC results this year. With a larger cohort of students taking exams this year, the A level pass rate has remained over 98% despite a 10% increase (79) in students taking A level or BTEC courses. Blackpool Sixth is particularly delighted by the very significant increase in the number of students getting the highest possible grade - A*. This has risen by 35%. Over half of A level and BTEC entries resulted in high grades (A*, A, B or equivalent).

Oxbridge success
Eight students achieved the demanding grades needed to progress to Oxford and Cambridge universities – this equals the record number for the Sixth Form.

Six students are on their way to Cambridge University: Stephanie Richards, Scott Wallace, Fergus Kent, David Walsh, Wesley Griffiths and Jonty Richardson. Amy Dutton and Amy Groves have secured their places at Oxford University. This group of students achieved a remarkable 19 A* grades amongst their combined results.
Triple Success
Triplets, Hannah, Claire and Rachael Sycamore, formerly of St. Aidan’s Church of England Technology College have all done exceptionally well, with 5 A* grades and 3 A grades between them, gaining them places at three top universities. Rachael will study Ancient History at Durham University, Hannah will study Art History at St. Andrews University, Claire will study Biochemistry at Nottingham University.
Former Kirkham Grammar student Andrew Bennett gained an A*, an A, a B and a C and will study Mechatronics at the University of Manchester.

Former Baines School students, Katie Cheatle (pictured right), Lewis Kapa (pictured left) and Alice Whalley each gained 3 A grades. Katie will study Medicine at the Peninsula Medical School and Lewis will study Dentistry at Newcastle University. Alice will study Accounting and Finance at the London School of Economics.

Winner of the Young Physicist competition earlier in the year, Harrison Holt-McHale (pictured above right) has notched up 2 A*s and 2 A grades, and now studies Electronics at York University. Harrison is pictured with former Highfield Humanities students (left to right) Emma Raftery, Sophie Atton, Amy Groves and Amy-Jean Christian.
Former Highfield Humanities College students Alex Benson and Rachael Gillibrand are amongst the top achievers. Rachael achieved an A* and 3 As and will study History at Leeds University. Alex received 2 A*s and 2 As and will study Nautical Engineering at Surrey University.
Sammii Priestley, formerly of Palatine Community Sports College, achieved 3* As in Graphics, Fine Art and Photography. She will study Illustration and Graphic Design at the University of Cumbria.
Achievement in the highly regarded BTEC National qualifications has also been remarkable with very many distinction grades awarded. The Sixth Form’s wide curriculum and flexible choices are allowing increasing numbers of Fylde Coast students to excel and set themselves on track for a brilliant future.

Former St.George’s High School students, Caius Ferguson (pictured above right), Callum Vernon (pictured above centre) and Luke Peeters (pictured above left) have achieved distinctions in their BTEC Music courses. All three will study Music Production at the nationally renowned Leeds College of Music.
Talented artist, Katie Hampson (left), formerly of Fleetwood Sports College has achieved a distinction in BTEC Media Production and A*s in Art and Graphics. She is now studying Animation, Illustration and Fine Art at Bolton University. Katie is pictured with Georgina Fox, formerly of Highfield Humanities College, who studies Film and Television at Edge Hill University.
A double distinction in BTEC Forensic Science and an A in Law has secured former Collegiate High School student, Daryl Beaumont, a place at Lancaster University to study Psychology.
Former Unity College student, Luke Wilks, achieved a double distinction in BTEC Sport, an A in Maths and a B in Economics.
Some of the students receiving results today have overcome particularly difficult circumstances on their way to exam success. Danika Sheals, who achieved A grades in Photography and Drama and Theatre Studies and a C in English Literature has coped with a condition which causes progressive mobility and pain issues. She has done so with great determination to succeed. She will pursue her love of Photography by studying the subject at degree level at UCLAN in Preston.
St Annes based student Rose Bannister (pictured right), formerly of Highfield Humanities College, is a superb example of learning to harness the successful traits of autism. Rose has faced many learning challenges and anxiety but her persistence and determination have enabled her to develop a high level of independence and achieve fabulous success. Rose will now undertake a Photography degree course. Rose is pictured with Tori Sanderson (pictured left), formerly of St Aidan’s Church of England Technology College, who achieved a Triple Distinction in BTEC Health and Social Care and will now study Operating Theatre Nursing at the University of Central Lancashire.
Principal Felicity Greeves commented, “These results are a tribute to the enormous amount of hard work from students and staff. The very high pass rate and the considerable increase in those achieving the very top grades are evidence of the culture of high expectations which we have at Blackpool Sixth.”
