Teaching-School Status
Blackpool Sixth Form and Hodgson Academy have in partnership been designated one of the first teaching schools in the country.

As one of only 100 teaching schools, the partnership will take a national and regional lead in both shaping and delivering the training and professional development of current and future generations of teachers. Hodgson and Blackpool Sixth Form will have responsibility for talent spotting programmes and leadership qualifications. The teaching schools programme is designed to bring more high quality graduates to the profession.
Blackpool Sixth Form is the only college to have been successful within this first wave of teaching school designations. Principal Felicity Greeves said: “Working with high quality graduates and educational leaders of the future will enable us to maintain and improve our teaching standards to the benefit of all our students.”
Teaching schools will be responsible for leading a group of schools, working with other partners including at least one university, to deliver high quality support for teachers and leaders at all stages of their careers. Hodgson and the Sixth Form’s strategic partners are Edge Hill University, Garstang Community Academy, Hambleton Primary School, Highfurlong School, St Mary’s Catholic High School and Westcliff Primary School.
Hodgson Academy’s Principal Tony Nicholson said: “This is an exceptional field of local teaching and leadership expertise to be utilised for teaching schools. We will offer school to school support, alongside training and professional and leadership development. Hodgson already has a long tradition of supporting and mentoring other schools to raise their attainment, but this new status will enable us to extend this work even further.”
Blackpool Sixth Form and Hodgson are currently the only teaching school within Lancashire, with Queen Elizabeth School in Cumbria as the nearest designated school. The government is proposing to have 500 teaching schools nationwide by 2014. Education Secretary Michael Gove explained the rationale: "In the NHS, teaching hospitals have become centres of excellence in their local areas by training current and future generations of doctors and nurses while also providing excellent medical care. We want teachers to have the same opportunities for excellent initial teacher training and ongoing professional development. We also want teaching schools to become the engines that will help weaker schools to raise their academic standards and to improve behaviour.”
