Art (Graphic Design)

Studying graphic design at Blackpool Sixth Form will provide you with a diverse range of creative and technical design skills and solutions. This course will give you an understanding of the creative design process in its entirety, enabling you to tackle briefs with confidence and develop the practical skills needed to flourish in today’s design industry.

 

Specific requirements

A grade C or above in a GCSE Art and Design subject or BTEC equivalent. Students without an Art and Design GCSE are required to present a portfolio/ selection of their work at interview.

 

What will I study?

Illustration both digital and hand-rendered, Photoshop and InDesign software, mixed media, printmaking, typography, logo design and branding, layout and design. You will also be introduced to a wide range of contemporary and historical practitioners to inform the development of your own practice.

You will be encouraged to research, experiment and develop personal yet innovative responses informed by relevant artists/designers/ practitioners. Visits to galleries, universities and outdoor excursions are an important part of the course.

The AS course consists of 2 units:

  • Unit 1 is comprised of a 6 week introductory project followed by a 13 week project
  • Unit 2 is a practical exam project undertaken over several weeks

The A2 Course consists of 2 units:

  • Unit 3 is comprised of an introductory project followed by an extended final project
  • Unit 4 is a practical exam project undertaken over several weeks

Students also have the opportunity in A2 to organise the final year exhibition.

Assessment

50% exam and 50% coursework in both AS and A2.

 

Where does it lead

Past students have successfully progressed onto art and design based courses at a variety of universities, into employment with graphic design agencies, magazines, newspapers, advertising companies, architecture, galleries, museums, art council, art education, art therapy. Some have also achieved great success as independent freelance artists and designers.
