Art (Textiles)

AS and A2 Textiles is a broad based course covering many aspects of creative textile design. It is very much an Art and Design course inspiring students with a very wide range of interests. From fashion to design for wallpapers, fabrics and interiors students can focus on the functional aspects of the subject or engage with the medium purely as Fine Art Students will have their lessons in airy, modern, purpose-built studios with an excellent range of quality equipment.
Specific requirements
Students should normally have at least a C grade in an Art and Design subject at GCSE or BTEC equivalent.
What will I study?
A variety of experimental printing and dyeing techniques. These range from disperse printing with transfer dyes to Shibori - an exciting Japanese version of tie-dyeing producing sumptuous layers of colour.
Constructed fabrics are also part of the course and students will be
shown how to knit and create fabrics by hand from felting wool fibres. They can also use one of the department’s embellishing machines or create their own paper using silk fibres.
Every student is encouraged to use their new found skills to develop an own individual style. The study of design and designers
is an integral part of the course and students will learn to analyse
and critically appraise the work of others as part of their initial project research.
Contextual references are important and we arrange visits to galleries during the year so that students may view artwork first hand. We also invite practising artists in to teach workshops so students have the opportunity to learn new skills and techniques.
Assessment
50% exam and 50% coursework
Students study 2 units each year, all of which are coursework or project based.
AS
- Unit 1 - Students produce a diverse portfolio of work which must include at least 1 sustained project
- Unit 2 - Students are issued with a list of topics set by the Examination Board and will choose one to be the topic of a sustained project. As part of this project, all students must work for a period of 5 hours under examination conditions
A2
- Unit 3 Second Year - Students, in consultation with their tutors, will produce a self-initiated project consisting of practical coursework and an essay of 1000 to 3000 words relating to their practical research
- Unit 4 Second Year - Students will produce an externally set assignment from a list of topics set by the examination board. At the end of the project, students will produce a final outcome under examination conditions which will cover a period of 15 hours, usually over 3 days
