Biology

AS Biology builds on your knowledge of Science from GCSE. You will be made aware of the advances in biotechnology; be able to discuss the value and responsible use of biology in society and you will have the opportunity to sustain and develop your enjoyment of science.
Specific requirements
Double Award Science* at higher tier (grade B or above) or GCSE Biology plus either GCSE Chemistry or GCSE Physics (grade B or above). GCSE Maths (grade C or above)
*This must be Core and Additional Science. Students who have taken Core and Applied Science will not be qualified to take this course and should consider one of the BTEC Applied Science courses instead.
We strongly advise you take AS Biology with AS Chemistry (many Biology courses at University require Chemistry).
What will I study?
- Unit 1 – microscopes, cell structure and transport, biochemistry, enzymes, osmosis, lungs and lung disease, heart and heart disease, pathogens, cholera and the immune system
- Unit 2 – DNA, mitosis, meiosis, genetic and environmental variation, gas exchange and carriage of oxygen, circulation, classification and biodiversity, variation in bacteria, water transport in plants
- Unit 4 – statistics, ecology, populations and the environment, photosynthesis, respiration, energy and ecosystems, nutrient cycles, genetic inheritance and evolution
- Unit 5 – homeostasis, nerves and the nervous system, the chemical basis of muscle contraction, protein synthesis, gene regulation and DNA technology
- Units 3 and 6 are the practical assessments and focus on How Science Works
Assessment
Exam and practical assessment (100% examination – no coursework)
- Unit 1 - Biology and Disease - exam taken in January of AS year
- Unit 2 - The Variety of Living Organisms - exam taken in June of AS year
- Unit 3 - Practical Assessment, completed during first two terms of AS year
- Unit 4 - Population and Environment - exam taken in January of A2 year
- Unit 5 - Control in Cells and Organisms - exam taken in June of A2 year
- Unit 6 – Practical Assessment, completed during first two terms of A2 year
