Certificate/Subsidiary Diploma in Applied Law

This course provides an excellent grounding in Law. The Law is a central aspect of all our lives and you will be able to use the knowledge and skills gained through this course in a wide variety of future study and career pathways. The approach of the course is highly practical and you will build your communication and thinking skills in an enjoyable and dynamic environment. The course is particularly suitable for students looking to pursue employment opportunities in the legal sector locally or further afield.

Please note: This is a single award course. You will receive a BTEC Level 3 Certificate (equivalent to one AS) after the first year and then can continue in the second year to gain the Subsidiary Diploma (equivalent to one A level).

Specific requirements

At least a C grade in GCSE English

What will I study?

There are three core modules in the first year:

Dispute Solving in the Legal System

  • The court system
  • Job roles in the courts
  • The alternatives to taking a case to court
  • The financial help available for legal issues

Understanding Law Making

  • How statutory (Acts of Parliament) rules are made and interpreted
  • European law and the institutions of the EU

Aspects of Legal Liability

  • The law of negligence
  • Legal damages
  • The elements of a crime
  • The aims of sentencing

In the second year you will study the following units:

  • Unlawful Homicide and Police Powers
  • Property Offences and Police Powers
  • One of the following: Consumer Law, Tort, Employment Law, Family Law

Assessment

100% coursework. A range of assessments are used including practical assignments (both individual and group based), presentations/demonstrations, written reports and project work. There will be opportunities to visit courts and hear from legal professionals.

Where does it lead

Progression opportunities will be into Higher Education or into employment. Law graduates go on to train as solicitors or barristers or find employment in many other areas e.g. local government, administration, business, personnel, banking, retail. The qualification also assists progression through employment as a Paralegal or Trainee Legal Executive as an alternative route into the Legal Profession as well as other areas of employment.
