Classical Civilisation

Study of the classical worlds of Greece and Rome is fascinating. You will come face-to-face with some most important figures in world history – names such as Caesar, Mark Antony, Cleopatra, Alexander the Great. Most importantly, you’ll find out that their societies and the problems they faced are almost identical to ours – super-powers, wars on terror, corrupt politicians, economic crisis, propaganda, gang warfare, to name just a few!

Did you know? Each year our students have the opportunity to visit Athens and Delphi - home to the famous Oracle of Apollo.

Specific requirements

A pass at ‘C’ grade in GCSE English Language is required.

What will I study?

AS Level Module One - Cicero and the fall of the Republic
Investigate the disintegration and collapse of the Roman Republic through the eyes of Marcus Tullius Cicero. Gain an understanding into how corrupt aristocrats abused power, how political intrigues caused instability at the heart of an empire, and how civil wars resulted in the death of millions.

AS Level Module Two - The Athenian Empire
Travel back to a time before Rome and Alexander to study the world of classical Greece. Investigate the volatile nature of Athenian politics where political ‘spin’, manipulation and control was part of the world’s first democracy.

A2 Level Module Three – Alexander
How did Alexander conquer the known world? Find out in this module. Question Alexander’s motives as well as his actions –
from the brilliant to the mad.

A2 Level Module Four - Power and Control: Augustus
This module focuses on Rome’s first ‘emperor’, Augustus Caesar. Investigate how Julius Caesar’s adopted son out-manoeuvred his political opponents, participated in the execution of Cicero, and defeated Mark Antony and Cleopatra to permanently erase the Republic.

Assessment

100% exam in both AS and A2.
