Dance

A Level Dance at Blackpool Sixth Form is an exciting and varied course, which offers a range of different study areas to suit anyone with a passion for dance. The course covers different practical skills including the development of contemporary dance technique, solo and group choreography and the ability to perform, both individually and as part of a duet or trio.
Specific requirements
• 2 years experience of a dance style other than Street dance, ie Jazz, Ballet, Contemporary or Modern Classes.
• Grade B or higher in GCSE Dance
• Grade C or higher in English Language or Literature
What will I study?
- Technique Classes in Contemporary, Ballet and Jazz
- Choreography for solos, duets, trios and groups
- Professional dance works and choreographers
- Anatomy and safe dance practice
- Analysis of dances in their cultural and historical context
- Practical performance skills
Assessment
At AS:
40% Theory
- structured questions (20 marks)
- two essay questions (40 marks)
60% Practical
- Solo Choreography and Performance (60 Marks)
- Performance in a duo/trio (30 marks)
At A2
50% Theory
- one question on a chosen area of study (40 marks)
- one question on a set work studied (40 marks)
50% Practical
- group choreography (45 marks)
- solo performance (30 marks)
Where does it lead
Students can progress to a broad range of degree courses in the areas of Performing Arts, Dance Performance, Drama and Theatre, Physical Education and Teaching. Students can also apply to vocational dance and theatre school courses. Wider career areas may include Dance Therapy, Choreography, Dance Notation and Physiotherapy, and Dance Science.
