BTEC Art & Design will allow you to specialise within the practical arts and provides an excellent introduction to a career in the visual arts industry. Practical skills within both two and three dimensions will be explored and you will be encouraged to broaden your understanding of the historical development of Art and Design and establish a critical appreciation. Visits to galleries, museums and a European or International study tour occur during the course.
Specific requirements
A grade C or above in a GCSE Art and Design subject or a BTEC Level 2 qualification in Art and Design. Students without this are required to present a portfolio/ selection of their work at interview.
What will I study?
Drawing, painting, mixed media, installation and printmaking. You will also be introduced to a wide range of contemporary and
historical practitioners to inform the development of your own practice. Students follow a broad range of projects within different specialist areas leading to a focused independent project in a specific specialist area in the 2nd Year of the programme.
You will be encouraged to research, experiment and develop personal yet innovative responses informed by relevant artists/ practitioners. Visits to galleries, universities and outdoor excursions are an important part of the course.
The AS course consists of 6 units. The following units are compulsory:
- Unit 1 – Visual Recording in Art & Design
- Unit 2 – Materials, Techniques and Processes in Art & Design
- Unit 3 - Ideas and Concepts in Art & Design
- Unit 4 – Visual Communication in Art & Design
- Unit 5 – Contextual Influences in Art & Design
Specialist unit:
Photography: Unit 32 Experimental imagery
The A2 Course consists of 5 units
Specialist Units:
- Graphic Design: Design for advertising
- Fine Art/Graphic Design: Mixed Media Image making
- Fine Art
- Textiles: Material manipulation with surface pattern and texture
Core Unit - Unit 6 will be undertaken in the form of a final major project, written by the individual student, completed in their chosen specialist area.
Assessment
100% coursework.
Where does it lead
To the BTEC HND foundation degree in Fine Art and top up degree or to other direct degree courses or employment in a range of Art and Design disciplines including: multimedia design, interior design, textiles design, theatre, stage design, painting and sculpture to name but a few.
