Extended Diploma in Health & Social Care

This course is the Extended Diploma (equivalent to 3 A levels). It is also available as the Level 3 Diploma (equivalent to 2 A levels).

There are over 300 different careers within the NHS and over 150 in social care. The Health and Social Care Diploma and Triple Extended will lay the foundations for a future in the health and social care sector. 

The emphasis is on applying theory with practice and students will get a real sense of the world of work in this developing, essential sector. Students develop not only academic skills but also practical and personal skills in order to prepare them for Higher Education and employment.

Specific requirements

An enthusiastic interest in the health and care sector. Motivation to access a variety of work placements. Good organisational skills and preference for course work

What will I study?

There will be an induction to key maspects of the course, followed by:

Mandatory Units

  • Unit 1 – Developing Effective Communication in H&SC
  • Unit 2 – Equality, Diversity and Rights in H&SC
  • Unit 3 – Health, safety and Security in H&SC
  • Unit 4 – Development through the life stages
  • Unit 5 – Anatomy and Physiology for H&SC
  • Unit 6 – Personal and Professional Development in H&SC (100 hours work experience)
  • Unit 7 – Sociological Perspectives for H&SC
  • Unit 8 – Psychological Perspectives for H&SC

For the Diploma you will also study:

  • Unit 10 – Caring for Children and Young People
  • Unit 11 – Safeguarding Adults and Promoting Independence Unit
  • Unit 12 – Public Health
  • Unit 14 – Physiological Disorders
  • Unit 18 – Working in the Health Sector
  • Unit 20 – Promoting Health Education
  • Unit 21 – Nutrition for H&SC
  • Unit 22 – Research Methodology for H&SC
  • Unit 28 – Caring for Older People
  • Unit 44 – Vocational Experience for H&SC (200 hours work experience)

100% coursework.

Where does it lead

BTEC Health and Social Care (with other suitable advanced level courses) will prepare you for a number of degree courses in areas such as, health and social care, mental health, nursing, primary teaching, radiography, occupational therapy.
