Film Studies

Film Studies is an exciting subject, giving students the opportunity to develop their knowledge and understanding of Hollywood, British and World cinema. Whilst learning about the inner workings of the film industry, students will consider their responses to cinema on a personal level, developing analytical skills. Alongside the theoretical elements of the course, students also have the opportunity to expand their practical skills through a range of creative projects including both pre and post-production work across the two years.
You will be required to view 18 certificate materials on this course.
 

Specific requirements

You need to have a grade C or above in GCSE English

What will I study?

In your first year, topics studied include:

  • Producers and Audiences, covering the Hollywood and UK film industries, fans, stars, and technology (studied through a range of key case studies)
  • British film topics, including British Horror films
  • American film, including a comparative study of the gangster ,genre

You will also complete two pieces of coursework, including a written analysis and a creative product

Assessment

60% exam and 40% coursework.

FM1 – Exploring Film Form, a module which is worth 40% of th AS grade.
This module is coursework based ,and involves both analytical and creative elements

FM2 – British and American Film
This module is assessed by a two and a half hour examination and is worth 60% of the overall AS grade

 

Where does it lead

Many students go on to university to study film or media at a higher level, including both theoretical and production-based courses. The study of film will also enhance your analytical and essay writing skills whatever course you decide to study at university. Film Studies is also a popular combination with other subjects at degree level.
