Fine Art

Fine Art is a specialist subject offering a range of techniques spanning both traditional and contemporary art.
As our courses offer a diverse approach to art and design, students have opportunities to engage with methods and techniques which are taught in each of the areas of study we offer. Skills taught in both session time and during extra curricular workshops are transferable to all areas and add creativity and depth to responses. Studies are highly personalised and we encourage individuals to express their ideas through guided independent study.
Students have numerous opportunities to access extra guidance from tutors outside of session time and a clear support plan is put in place to aid student achievement. The department is an exciting and vibrant environment in which to study.
Specific requirements
A grade C or above in an art and design subject is required. Students are required to present a portfolio of work at interview.
What will I study?
Drawing, painting, printmaking and mixed media are offered. You will be encouraged to experiment and develop an innovative and personal approach to your artwork. Research underpins your developmental work with an emphasis on relevant artists. Visits to galleries, universities and outdoor excursions are an important part of the course and are used to develop your awareness of the subject.
Assessment
60% coursework.
40% examination.
Where does it lead
Past students have progressed onto art / design based courses at a variety of universities, some are now working for the Arts Council, in galleries, museums, Art Education, Art Therapy and some have achieved great success as independent artists and
designer-makers. There are also many opportunities to pursue careers in creative and design based industries.
