French

Choosing French will encourage you to develop an interest and enthusiasm for the culture of France and French-speaking countries as well as social, political and environmental global issues. It will help you to improve your understanding of the language and to use it confidently for a range of purposes.

 

Specific requirements

B grade or above in GCSE French.

What will I study?

AS topics

  • Leisure and Lifestyles, including travel and tourism, sport, hobbies, entertainment, customs, traditions, healthy living – health and nutrition, diet and exercise; unhealthy living – drugs, aids, smoking, alcohol
  • The Individual and Society, including relationships and responsibilities, gender issues, youth culture (values, peer groups, fashions and trends), education, vocational training and future careers

A2 topics

  • Environmental Issues, including technology, pollution, global warming, transport, energy, nuclear energy, renewable energies, conservation, recycling, sustainability
  • Social and Political Issues, including the role of the media, racism, immigration, social exclusion and integration, terrorism, world of work (employment, commerce, globalisation)
  • For the oral exposé in the A2 speaking examination, students will have the opportunity to choose from three areas: the World of Cinema, the World of Literature or Regions of France or a French speaking country.

Assessment

AS - 2 units

  • Unit 1- Speaking Test, worth 40% of AS marks
  • Unit 2 - Listening, reading and writing, worth 60% of AS marks

A2 - further 2 Units

  • Unit 3 - Speaking Test, worth 40% of A2 marks
  • Unit 4 - Listening, Reading and writing, worth 60% of A2 marks

Where does it lead

Language skills are much sought after in the commercial world. Many students go on to study languages at University, often in combination with another subject and find employment in areas as varied as Law, International Tourism, and Business.
