Further Mathematics

You should consider studying Further Mathematics if you intend to study Maths, Physics, Engineering or Economics at university. Further Maths and Mathematics make up Double Maths and must be studied together. This course will appeal to students who enjoy the theoretical aspects of the subject and are keen to pursue this theory using more complex concepts.

Did you know? Each year our students have the opportunity to take part in the National Senior Maths Challenge.

Specific requirements

You need to have at least a grade A in GCSE Mathematics, with a number of A or B grades in other relevant subjects.

What will I study?

The AS year consists of six modules which are Core 1, Core 2 and Statistics 1 (please see the previous page on Mathematics for more information about these modules) plus:

  • Mechanics 1 - the Maths of Physics: Forces, Equations of Motion
  • Decision 1 - this module uses sets of rules, called algorithms, to solve specific problems (for example a satellite navigation system will solve the problem of finding the shortest route from A to B by using Dijkstra’s algorithm.)
  • Further Pure 1 - Matrices, Proof, Complex Numbers and Graphs

In the A2 year a further six modules are studied:

  • Core 3 and Core 4 (which both build on the work covered in Core 1 and Core 2), Mechanics 2, Statistics 2, Further Pure 2 and Further Pure 3.

Assessment

100% exam in both AS and A2.

In the AS year you will be examined in each of the six modules, three in January and three in June

  • In the A2 year you will be examined in each of the six modules, three in January and three in June

Where does it lead

A strong mathematical ability is highly regarded by employers and universities. At some Universities A-Level Further Mathematics is an essential requirement to study Mathematics and is highly desirable for other degree courses such as Physics and Engineering
