Geography

Geography is one of the most relevant subjects you can study. Geography students gain a diverse view of the world and the human and physical processes that have shaped it. You will cover a range of geographical topics to suit all tastes, from world cities where we look at the impact of the Olympic 2012 project and slum development in Mumbai, to studies of plate tectonics and associated hazards such as the 2004 tsunami.

Did you know? Geography students get to see the world, from rivers in the Bowland Fells to studying Plate Tectonics in Italy.

Specific requirements

No requirement to have studied Geography before, but a keen interest in the world around you is a must. If you have Geography GCSE, we would expect a C grade or above.

What will I study?

AS - Unit One – Physical and Human Geography
Gain a broad understanding of physical and human themes in the opening AS module. From river and coastal landscapes to population and the debates that surround energy use, explore the processes, landforms and issues that affect us on a local, national and international scale.

AS - Unit Two – Geographical Skills
Fine tune your Geographical skills in this topic and be able to apply these skills to develop a greater understanding of the world we live in. This is where you take a geographical perspective of analysing data, presenting data collected through fieldwork and developing new skills of collecting information first hand.

A2 - Unit Three – Contemporary Geographical Issues
Investigate the global relevance of Geography through the study of physical and human issues from across the world. In Plate Tectonics, Weather and Climate and World Cities, explore the issues facing the world today. As part of the physical side of this unit, we study natural hazards, the power of the planet and how we seek to manage the threats that processes can bring to society.

A2 -Unit Four – Geographical Issue Evaluation
For the January A2 exam, students are given a pre-release booklet to prepare and analyse centered on a specific contemporary Geographical topic. Here, you will hone your skills in interpreting information, debating an issue and reaching decisive conclusions. This gives students the opportunity to solve issues in the way that planners, managers and authorities do, giving an insight into working with Geography.

Assessment

100% exam in both AS and A2.

Where does it lead

Many of our students go on to study Geography, or a more specific aspect of Geography, at university. For the skills they acquire, Geographers are highly regarded in many career areas such as planning, public services, business, management, journalism, media and environmental work.
