Government and Politics

Politics affects all our daily lives from how much the bus costs in the morning to what we learn at school. We increasingly live in a political world where ordinary citizens and even celebrities involve themselves in political issues. The Government and Politics course aims to prepare students to make a positive contribution to their communities by developing a students communication skills and knowledge of current affairs.
Did you know? Big Ben is not a clock and every US president with a beard has been a Republican.
Specific requirements
B grade or higher in a GCSE essay-based subject is required e.g English, History, RE.
What will I study?
In the AS year the course includes:
- The British political system and possible alternatives
- Why people vote the way that they do
- The organisation, function and ideologies of political parties and pressure groups
- The role of the Prime Minister
- The inner workings of the British Parliament
In the A2 year, the course concentrates on the USA, its politics and its system of government.
Assessment
100% exam in both AS and A2.
Where does it lead
As the course teaches the skills of arguments, communications and judgment, Politics is an excellent choice for those wishing to go onto a very wide range of higher education courses. This could lead to careers in law, the diplomatic service, civil service or journalism
