ICT

This broad-based course will give you the essential skills to take up further study or training in ICT and will enable you to join the highly paid, challenging world of Software Engineering, Systems Analysis and other related jobs. During your course, you will use state-of-the-art Apple Macs, well known for their uniqueness and style. 24-Hour access to our e-learning environment will help you with research and coursework. This specification encourages candidates to become discerning users of ICT, developing a broad range of ICT skills and knowledge and understanding of ICT.

 

Specific requirements

You do not need to have taken an ICT qualification at school, however if you have taken ICT as a GCSE or BTEC course, then a grade C is required.

What will I study?

In AS Year:

Unit 1 – Information Systems
A written paper of two sections, A and B, presented in a question and answer booklet. There are no optional questions. Quality of Written Communication is assessed in two questions. You will be required to prepare a spreadsheet on a specific topic, defined by WJEC, in advance of the written paper. Hard copies of the spreadsheet are taken into the examination and used to answer questions in Section B. This spreadsheet is submitted with the completed examination paper.

Unit 2 – Presenting Information
You will be required to undertake Desktop Publishing and multimedia tasks, presenting the outcome for assessment.

In A2 Year:

Unit 3 – Use and Impact of ICT (60% Examination)
This unit is about the use and impact of Information and Communication Technology. A written paper of two sections, A and B, presented as a question paper requiring a separate answer booklet. You will answer all questions in Section A and one from two in Section B. Quality of Written Communication is assessed in two questions.

Unit 4 – Relational Database Project
You will be required to analyse, design, implement, test and evaluate a solution to a problem of your choice requiring the use of a relational database. This is a substantial piece of work, undertaken over an extended period of time. You will discover how a structured database could be used in an organisation.

Assessment

60% exam and 40% coursework in both AS and A2.
