Media Studies

Media Studies is a diverse and exciting subject designed to develop students’ knowledge and awareness of the media industries around them. By emphasising key approaches such as genre, audience and representation, you will develop a ‘toolkit’ with which to deconstruct and analyse the meanings behind a range of media texts from adverts to websites to blockbuster movies. The course encourages you to think independently about the media, its presence in our lives and its influence.
You will be required to view 18 certificate materials on this course.
Specific requirements
You need to have a grade C or above in GCSE English
What will I study?
In your first year, topics studied include
- Analytical skills of print, web and moving image-based media
- Representation of a range of key areas, including gender, age, ethnicity and place
- Audience targeting and responses to the media
You will also complete a piece of coursework, including a creative product and written report.
Assessment
50% exam and 50% coursework.
Where does it lead
Many students go on to university to study media at a higher level, with courses ranging from media theory and production, marketing, journalism, public relations and film studies. Career opportunities exist in a variety of fields including radio, TV, the press and media production.
