Music

Music is a highly rewarding subject that enables you to develop and showcase your creative talents. Not only will you study a variety of Western Classical Music spanning 400 years, but you will also gain knowledge about film music, world music and modern music. During lessons you will analyse pieces and also recreate them. Knowledge gained through the study of set works will then connect to other aspects of the course including performance and composition.

Specific requirements

• GCSE Music – grade C or above
• Grade 5 ABRSM or above in your main instrument/voice
• Grade 5 ABRSM Music Theory

What will I study?

The course is divided into 3 main topics areas:

Performance
Throughout the course you will have plenty of opportunity to perform a wide range of music both as a soloist and also as part of an ensemble. You will gradually build up a repertoire of music to be performed in a short, informal recital at the end of the year. This will be 5-6 minutes long for the AS course and 12-15 minutes long for the A2 course.

Composition
You will develop your composition skills using computer software and explore a wide range of composition styles from music for film and popular song to classical styles including choral and instrumental genres. You will compose a 3-minute piece
to a brief set by the exam board.

Developing Musical Understanding
This part of the course is divided into 3 sections:
Listening, Investigating Musical Styles and Understanding Chords & Lines. This is where you listen to a variety of set works from different eras and learn how to recognise musical features from each. You will also be introduced to 4-part harmony.

Assessment

60% is a coursework portfolio and 40% exam for both AS and A2.

Where does it lead

A very wide range of opportunities are on offer for those with the A-level Music qualification, including many in both the media and music industries. Past students, who also include Victoria Hesketh (Little Boots), have gone on to study music at LIPA, Leeds College of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music.
