Music Technology

A level Music Technology gives students the knowledge and skills required for work and further study in this exciting industry. You will use our professional recording studios to learn how to record and sequence instruments, live bands and orchestras. Musicians, including those who do not play a traditional instrument, are encouraged to create original materials using technology.
Specific requirements
• You should be able to read music and identify rhythms using traditional notation (e.g. Crotchet, quaver, minim)
What will I study?
AS
Unit 1 – 70% Coursework
Comprises of 3 tasks which develop a range of musical and technological skills to create arrangements and recordings. You will have theory and practical sessions designed to teach you about production software and hardware, giving you the opportunity to excel as a musician and as a production specialist.
Unit 2 – 30% Examination
Listening and Analysing. (Students will be examined on musical and technological processes studied throughout the AS year)
A2
Unit 3 – 60% Coursework
Comprises three tasks which cover: Sequence integrated performance (editing and production skills), multi-track recording – producing unique sonic recordings, composing using technology.
Unit 4 – 40% Examination
Analysing and Producing.
- Section A: Questions 1–4 will test students’ musical understanding, their ability to manipulate and correct recorded music and their ability to write commentaries on technological processes
- Section B: Question 5 will be a practical task involving the production of a balanced stereo mix
Assessment
AS: 70% coursework, 30% examination
A2: 60% Coursework, 40% Examination
