Physics

Physics is crucial to understanding the world around us, the world inside us, and the world beyond us. It is the most basic and fundamental science. Physics challenges our imaginations with concepts like quantum and relativity, and it leads to great discoveries, like computers and lasers, that change our lives.
Specific requirements
Double Award Science* at higher tier (grade B or above) or GCSE Physics (grade B or above) and GCSE Biology or Chemistry (Grade B or above).
You should also achieve a grade B or above in GCSE Maths and English (higher tier).
* This must be Core and Additional Science. Students who have taken Core and Applied Science will not be qualified to take this course and should consider one of the BTEC Applied Science courses instead.
What will I study?
AS Units
- Unit 1 – Particles, Quantum Phenomena and Electricity
- Unit 2 – Mechanics, Materials and Waves
A2 Units
- Unit 4 – Fields and Further Mechanics
- Unit 5 –Nuclear and Thermal Physics and Turning Points in Physics
Units 3 and 6 are the practical assessments and focus on Practical Skills in A2 Physics.
Assessment
- Unit 1 - Exam taken in May of AS year
- Unit 2 - Exam taken in January of AS year
- Unit 3 - Practical exam taken in May of AS year
- Unit 4 - Exam taken in January of your second year
- Unit 5 - Exam taken in June of your second year
- Unit 6 - Practical exam taken in May of A2 year
Both units 5 and 6 will have synoptic components where you will be tested on AS as well as A2 knowledge.
Where does it lead
Most students go on to higher education in areas such as Physics, Engineering and Medicine. The skills learned in Physics are also sought after in many other numerate disciplines such as finance.
