Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behaviour and involves the examination of various theories and consideration of research studies. In Psychology you will look to answer questions such as: Are mental disorders like Schizophrenia genetic or learned? How does stress lead to illness? Are nurseries bad for children?
Specific requirements
What will I study?
At AS level, there will be two units, which each will be worth 50% of the total AS marks.
Unit 1
Cognitive psychology - including how our memory works
Developmental psychology – including why we form bonds with our parents, and what happens if these bonds are disrupted
Research methods
Unit 2
Physiological psychology – you will study how the body responds to stress
Social psychology – social influence research, including reasons for conformity
Individual differences – you will study the concept of abnormality
At A2 level, you will study towards TWO further units:
Unit 3
You will study three important psychology topics from a wider choice
Unit 4
This unit has three components: Psychopathology – you will study schizophrenia. Psychology in Action – addictive behaviors or media psychology. Psychological research and scientific methods – this will involve you researching and conducting small scale investigations
Assessment
100% exam in both AS and A2.
Each of the AS units is assessed by external examination and is one hour 30 minutes long. You may be entered for one unit in January, the remaining unit will be taken in May/June. At A2 level, unit 3 is 1 hour 30 minutes, unit 4 is two hours in duration. You
will be entered for one unit in January and the remaining unit will be assessed in June.
Where does it lead
Psychology can help to prepare you for a wide range of HE courses and careers. For example, psychology is useful for all types of teaching, nursing and social work. Studying psychology is relevant to any job that involves working directly with people (such as human resources, marketing, customer relations). Psychology can lead to a career as a research scientist, not to mention the obvious careers as clinical, educational, occupational, health and counseling psychologists.
