Religion, Ethics & Philosphy

REP is an A level course that makes you think about different perspectives on the world that we live in. It is a course that tackles elements of life that have made humans wonder for thousands of years – as well as 21st century issues that are currently hitting the news. If you enjoy active discussion, considering different opinions and reflecting on dilemmas, then this is the subject for you.

Specific requirements

A grade B or above in English is strongly recommended

What will I study?

You will take AQA Religious Studies modules that explore ethical and philosophical dilemas. You will have the chance to discuss and evaluate religious and non-religious views on ‘ultimate questions’ such as:

  • Is life all about being happy?
  • Could everything have come from nothing?
  • Where do we get our sense of right and wrong?
  • Are we nothing more than atoms and chemistry?

You will also, for example:

  • Investigate claims of miracles, and ‘near death experiences’
  • Discuss ethical dilemmas on life, death and modern technology
  • Consider possible conflicts between science and religion

Assessment

100% exam in both AS and A2

Where does it lead

The course is an excellent step towards a Higher Education course in any reflective subject but is particularly relevant to a degree in Philosophy or Religious Studies. Many students go onto the teaching and caring professions, though the unique range of thinking skills developed are of use in any area of study or employment, even Science or Law for example.
