Sociology

Sociology is a way of thinking about the world. The raw material of sociology is the experience of ordinary people in ordinary, daily life. But, it is these very daily lives which can provide us with a whole host of clues about, for example, what makes some people more likely to commit crime than others. What is important for a sociologist is the ability to evaluate evidence and choose between possible explanations.

Did you know? Martin Luther King, Michelle Obama and actor Robin Williams are all famous sociology graduates.

 

Specific requirements

A good grade in a written GCSE subject (e.g. English, History, RE)

 

What will I study?

AS Year

  • Unit 1 - Families and Household: here you will study the reasons why more couples now cohabit and why many more marriages end in divorce
  • Unit 2 - Education and Sociological Methods: you will explore questions such as why girls now achieve better results than boys and why girls and boys opt to study different subjects

A2 Year

  • Unit 3 – Beliefs in Society: here you will explore reasons for the growth in different religious organizations, such as Scientology and spiritual movements such as the New Age
  • Unit 4 - Crime and Deviance Theory and Methods: in this unit you will have the opportunity to research topics such as cybercrime and drug trafficking

Assessment

100% exam in both AS and A2.

AS Sociology you will take 2 exams, one in January and one in May/June. These are worth 50% of your final A level Sociology you will take 2 exams, one in January and one in May/June. These are worth 50% of your final A level.

Where does it lead

Sociology is a useful academic subject if you are considering Higher Education. It is important for any career involving dealing with the general public e.g. teaching, medicine, police, social work, care work, working in personnel.
