Statistics

You should seriously consider Statistics if you enjoy Mathematics and feel confident in the statistics work you have met so far at GCSE.
Although it is a challenging subject, it is also extremely rewarding. You will develop skills that are much sought after by employers and Statistics qualifications can help you towards a future career in psychology, geography and business as well as many others.
Specific requirements
You prefer you to have at least a grade B in GCSE Mathematics. You do not need to have taken GCSE Statistics.
What will I study?
The AS year consists of three modules which are:
- Statistics 1 – Probability, correlation, averages and topics that will be new to you – standard deviation, binomial distribution and normal distribution,
- Statistics 2 – Sampling, cumulative frequency and time series (moving averages) as well as topics that will be new to you – the Poisson distribution and expectation.
- Statistics 3 - this module consists of different methods to test sets of data and draw conclusions: sign test, Wilcoxon signed rank test, Mann Whitney U test and tests for correlation.
In the A2 year a further three modules are studied: Statistics 4, 5 and 6 which all build on AS techniques. In addition to being introduced to three new probability distributions you will also discover how these techniques can be applied to the world of business and medical research looking at the statistics behind quality control and drugs testing.
Assessment
100% exam in both AS and A2.
- In the AS year you will be examined in each of the three modules, one in January and two in June.
- In the A2 year you will be examined in each of the three modules, one in January and two in June.
Where does it lead
Having knowledge of statistical techniques is highly regarded by employers and universities. A-Level statistics is a complementary subject for students that are studying social sciences, sciences, business studies and geography.
