Sustainable Sixth
Blackpool Sixth is fully committed to being an environmentally-friendly organisation. We put a big emphasis on "sustainability" which means always considering the impact of what we do on the environment and future resources. We have an important role in educating our students and staff on the pressing need to care for the natural world and act in ways which enhance rather than harm the environment. We seek to use resources with care and look to reduce our carbon footprint.
Our core value of Respect includes "respect for the environment" and our core value of Global Citizenship means "being active in improving our world and broadening horizons."
Click here for our current Sustainability policy. The policy was produced after consultation with our students and staff and was written by our Sustainability Group which includes staff, students and a parent governor. The Sustainability group meets at least twice every half-term. Please contact Alan Lloyd, Vice Principal Resources for more information.
Eco Action

We have a highly active student enrichment group called Eco Action. This group's role is to raise environmental awareness in the college and take action on college, local, national and even international matters. The group meets weekly.
Recent highlights of the group's work are:
-
Achieving the Eco Schools Silver Award
- Winning the Blackpool Civic Trust environmental shield 2010.
- Establishing a College-wide paper recycling scheme.
- Cutting paper usage and wastage by over 30%.
- Working with College management to ensure that the College cuts its carbon footprint and puts energy efficiency and water saving at the top of its priorities for its new and existing buildings. The carbon footprint has been reduced by over 13% in 2009-10 and a rainwater harvesting system saves over 2 million litres of water a year.
- Improving the range of natural habitats in the College grounds by planting over 60 trees.
- Organising litter-picks on Blackpool Old Road together with Highfurlong School.
- Promoting "green" forms of transport for students and staff.
- Helping to create an International Garden in the main College courtyard, featuring wildlife-friendly species.
- Participating in a two year international partnership with a school in Izmir, Turkey, focusing on the issue of Climate Change.
- Receiving a visit and personal acknowledgement from the Minister for Climate Change, Ed Miliband (now leader of Her Majesty's Opposition) for the group's campaigning and awareness raising work.
- Holding an environmentally themed competition for primary school children across Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre.
- Organising Blackpool's first Eco Festival which was held on Saturday April 3rd 2010.
