International Baccalaureate Diploma Course Information

ENGLISH STANDARD AND HIGHER LEVEL

This is a Literature course, offering exciting opportunities for all those students who are enthusiastic about reading and discussion. It is aimed not only at those students who wish to pursue Literature or related studies at university but also at students who simply wish to continue their Literature studies beyond GCSE.

The aims of the course are:
• To develop a personal appreciation of literature and develop an understanding of the techniques involved in literary criticism.
• To develop your powers of expression, both in oral and written communication, and to provide the opportunity of practising and developing the skills involved in writing and speaking in a variety of styles and situations.
• To introduce you to a range of literary works of different periods, genres, styles and contexts.
• To broaden your perspective through the study of works from other cultures and languages.
• To introduce you to ways of approaching and studying literature, leading to the development of an understanding and appreciation of the relationships between different works.
• To develop the ability to engage in close, detailed analysis of written text.
• To promote in students an enjoyment of, and lifelong interest in, literature.

What will I study?

You will study 15 texts in total at Higher Level and 11 texts at Standard Level.
Part 1: World Literature (coursework) 20%
Three texts, originally written in a language other than English, will be studied for both Higher Level and Standard Level. These will be linked by theme, genre, period, culture or style.
Higher Level: Two written assignments; 1 based on a comparative study of at least two of the texts, the other based on texts not used in assignment 1. Both pieces are worth 10% each.
Standard Level: One written assignment; which will be a comparative study of at least two of the texts studied. (20%)

Part 2: Detailed Study 15%
Higher Level: Four texts will be studied and the assessment will take the form of an Individual Oral Commentary (15mins) based on an extract chosen by the teacher from the texts studied. The extract will be accompanied by guiding questions.
Standard Level: Two texts will be studied and the assessment (Individual Oral Commentary) will be the same as for the Higher Level.

Part 3: External Examination 50%
Higher Level:
Four texts are studied and these will be grouped together by genre.
Standard Level: Three texts are studied and these will be grouped together by genre. For both Higher and Standard Levels, students will sit two written papers.

Paper 1: A written commentary based on one of the texts studied for part 3. (2hrs for Higher Level students and 1½
hrs for Standard Level students)
Paper 2: Essay questions on the texts studied for part 3.

Part 4: Individual Oral Presentation 15% (10-15mins)
For both Higher and Standard Level students this will consist of a presentation of a topic, chosen by the student, based on text(s) studied for Part 4.
