International Baccalaureate Diploma Course Information
FRENCH B STANDARD AND HIGHER LEVEL
The study of French B aims to promote an understanding of another culture through the study of its language. It includes three parts: language, text and cultural awareness. These will be fully integrated.
What will I study?
The language skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening will be developed within the context of a range of topics chosen to be of interest to yourself and useful for citizens of the world. The main emphasis will be on the different communicative purposes of various types of texts.
You will be exposed to different text types and materials from a wide variety of sources and will analyse what characterises each type of text. The course aims to enable you to become aware of this diversity, to understand the structures and to write in a style which is appropriate to the task and audience in terms of structure, register, grammar and content.
By the end of the course, you should be able to write informal and formal letters, a diary entry, a newspaper article, a speech, a brochure and other specific types of texts. For the Higher Level, students will study more high-quality and literary texts and should be able to produce a broader variety of texts using a wide range of vocabulary including idioms.
The material studied will encourage an awareness and appreciation of the different perspectives of French-speaking people and of the culture(s) and issues where the language is spoken. It will extend your horizons and instil a spirit of internationalism. It will provide you with a basis for further study, work and leisure through language.
