GEOGRAPHY HIGHER LEVEL

The syllabus is divided into three parts: Core theme, optional themes and geographical skills.

What will I study?

Core theme:
This compulsory element examines the nature of human populations and human ability to exploit resources from around the globe. Social and economic development is a complex consequence of this exploitation and it is examined at a range of scales and locations from across the world.

Higher Level optional themes:
• Drainage Basins and their management
• Arid Environments and their Management
• Coasts and their Management
• Lithospheric processes and Hazards
• Ecosystems and Human Activity
• Contemporary Issues in Geographical Regions
• Productive Activities: aspects of change
• Globalisation
• Topographic Mapping
• Climatic Hazards and Change.

Higher Level Coursework:
Internal assessment of your work is an integral part of the course and will be based on fieldwork and secondary data.

Assessment

Paper 1 Core Themes: 90 minutes comprising two Questions 25%
Paper 2 Options: 150 minutes comprising four Questions 50%
Internal Assessment: Written report of 2500 words maximum 25%
