PSYCHOLOGY
Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behaviour.
What will I study?
Part 1:
Biological Level of Analysis: including the study of localization of function in the brain, the effects of neurotransmission and hormones on behaviour, the effects of the environment on physiological processes (e.g. jet lag, bodily rhythms), the interaction between cognition and physiology (e.g. amnesia) and the use of brain imaging and the influence of genetics on behaviour.
Socio-Cultural Level of Analysis: including the study of situational and dispositional factors in explaining behaviour, the theory of attribution, the formation of stereotypes, the social learning theory, conformity and cultural norms.
Cognitive Level of Analysis: including the study of memory, perception and language, how biological factors affect cognitive processes (e.g. Alzheimer’s disease, sleep deprivation), how social or cultural factors affect cognitive processes (e.g. the effect of video games on attention), and the use of technology in investigating cognitive processes (e.g. MRI scanning)
Part 2:
Abnormal Psychology focuses on diagnosing, explaining and treating humans suffering from psychological disorders; such as, depression and bulimia. This approach embraces on the etiology, symptoms and prevalence of each disorder. As a consequence of this understanding, it is possible to administer effective treatments while at the same time having an appreciation of relevant cultural and gender variations.
Health Psychology (HL ONLY) is concerned with how different factors, such as lifestyle and social context, may influence health and illness. One of the goals of health psychology is to promote an understanding of behaviour that leads to a healthier lifestyle. The health psychology option focuses on stress, substance abuse, addiction, obesity and health promotion, Throughout Parts 1 and 2 you will investigate the research methods used to study behaviour and compare their various advantages and disadvantages.
Part 3:
Qualitative research in Psychology (HL ONLY) takes place in the real world, as opposed to the laboratory, and deals with how people give meaning to their own experiences. It involves research of behaviour in a natural setting, and is followed by an attempt to interpret the behaviour and the meanings that people have given to their experiences.
Part 4:
Simple experimental study: You are required to plan and undertake a simple experimental study and to produce a report of their study.
Assessment
There are two examinations for the standard level and three examinations for the higher level, all include a mixture of short answer and essay questions, which will be taken in May of the second year. There is also an internally assessed report of an experimental investigation (see part 4 above) conducted by each student, which will be completed towards the end of the first year, which counts for 20% of the overall assessment.
