International Baccalaureate Diploma Course Information

SPANISH AB INITIO

The overall objective of this course is for you to be able to understand and communicate in Spanish in a variety of everyday situations and to have some awareness of the culture of Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries.
You will be encouraged to take part in cultural activities such as film or theatre visits. They will also have the opportunity to join the college visit to Madrid during the February half term holiday.

Specific Requirements

You are required to have the standard college entry requirements for IB including GCSE grade C or above in another Modern Foreign Language.

What will I study?

The course will be based on 7 topic areas:
• The individual
• Education and work
• Town and services
• Food and drink
• Leisure and travel
• The environment
• Health and emergencies

Skills: The four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking will be regularly practised in class around these topics.
Grammar: Great emphasis is placed on the knowledge and correct use of grammar; therefore you will be working intensively on learning verbs, tenses, and grammatical constructions. The main focus is the acquisition of the language, using the target language as often as possible in the classroom.
Vocabulary: It is essential to build up a wide knowledge of vocabulary as quickly as possible. Therefore, vocabulary learning must be done on a regular basis to be successful on this course.
Culture: We shall also be looking at everyday lives, customs, traditions and festivals of both Spain and Spanish speaking countries. As Spanish is such an important world language it is always fascinating to learn something of the many countries which have Spanish as their first language.

Assessment

Assessment will be done continuously throughout the course to help you reinforce your learning and to help you to measure your progress throughout the course.
The IB diploma exams will take place in May of the second year. These will include:
a) a written exam lasting 1 hour 30 mins where you write two pieces in Spanish, eg. Email, short letter, article or story. (30%)
b) a reading comprehension exam lasting 1 hour 30 mins handling a wide variety of texts such as magazine articles or advertisements, with written response (40%)
c) an individual oral assessment with your teacher, in March/April of year 2, consisting of a short presentation, followed by related questions and conversation (15%)
d) at least 3 interactive oral assessments which will be based on role plays, prepared presentations and group activities. (15%).

Where does it lead?

Most university Spanish departments accept students at all levels. Students often choose to study Spanish in combination with another foreign language or with a subject such as European Studies, Business Studies, Marketing, Law, Politics or History.
