Students take up the green challenge

Eco Action students from The Blackpool Sixth Form College are preparing for EcoFest 2010, our first eco-festival which will encourage people to green up their lives. The festival will be held between 12pm and 4pm on Saturday April 3 and will attract families from across the Fylde Coast.
Jon McLeod, Eco Action Co-ordinator, said: "We want to get as many people along as possible. The emphasis is on fun but behind that, it's a great opportunity to find out about environmental issues, particularly climate change, and what we can do about it."
The event will include competitions, information about energy saving in the home and technologies you can use. There will also be information on eco-friendly ways of living which will save you money as well as the environment. The idea for the event came from the college's two year international project with our partner school in Izmir, Turkey, which specialises on the environment and climate change.
20 students and four members of staff took part in a street festival during the visit to our partner school, Kipa 10 Lisesi, in June 2009 and decided to bring the idea back to Blackpool.
This year's Eco Fest will coincide with a visit of a group from the college's new Turkish friends.
Calvin Yuen, a member of the college's Eco Action group, said, "We went to Turkey and saw how they were tackling global warming. They had a festival in the town and a big crowd of people visited the students' stalls about helping the environment. We want the same - hopefully hundreds of people will come to the festival and learn something new. We want to encourage people to reduce waste and spread the message."
EcoFest activities have been arranged to make sure local nursery and school children take part. An EcoAccessorise competition will challenge children to make an Easter bonnet out of recycled materials, while the Solaris Centre will provide advice and ideas on cutting your carbon footprint and saving money.
An eco-fashion show and junk modelling will give people the chance to create a sculpture or other art-work from recycled materials.
There will also be an Eggs Factor contest - a celebrity themed egg decoration competition as well as face-painting, Easter egg hunts and stalls run by local businesses and environmental organisations.
The festival is being supported by Blackpool Council, Councillor Peter Collins (pictured above), from Park ward, Lancashire and Merseyside Wildlife Trust, Oxfam, the Solaris Centre and the HERO project, which promotes enterprise in schools.
