Sixth Form Rugby Academy Boss gets Olympic posting
Blackpool Sixth Form College’s Rugby Academy director, Paul Moran, has been selected to help coach and support Team GB’s Wheelchair Rugby squad at the 2012 Paralympic Games in London.
Paul, who is also a Learning Mentor within the Sixth Form’s Department of Sport, Tourism and Health, was delighted at the call-up, especially as it came as something of a surprise. He had applied to be volunteer at the Olympic Games, but he was soon head-hunted by the Director of Wheelchair Basketball and Rugby for an important role with the Wheelchair Rugby squad.
Paul’s main role will be as a “field of play team member”. He will assist players during the games and will help ensure their safety at all times. He will also be helping to motivate players before and after events.
He is attending a major international event on April 15th at the Olympic Village where GB will take on three other Nations in a warm up tournament. He will join Team GB for a training event in June for 3 days in June where the squad will undergo final preparation for the Games.
The main event happens on August 29th when the wheelchair rugby competition gets underway in the Olympic Village. But this is not the only major event in Paul’s life this summer – he is getting married shortly before the Paralympic Games begin!
Paul says, “This is a great opportunity for me to make a contribution to international paralympic sport. I am very appreciative of Blackpool Sixth Form College and Thornton RUFC for supporting me in this once in a lifetime adventure.”
