Pre-Sixth tasks for Performing Arts and Music

Below are the tasks for each course which we would like you to complete to prepare you for the start of term:

Dance

To be a successful performer, dancers must develop their interpretative skills. These include:

  • facial expression
  • timing
  • rhythmical awareness
  • focus

Find a definition for each one of the above skills and think of an example of how you have used these in dances that you have performed. Consider why using these skills was important and what effect it created for the audience or examiner.

Drama & Theatre Studies

A crucial skill for successful drama students is their ability to describe human behaviours like movement and speech. Choose one of the following words: WALK or SAY. List all the different words you could use as an alternative. For example, 'stagger' 'stumble' or 'yell' 'scream.'

You are doing this task because it important to have a good vocabulary to describe your ideas when directing other people as well as to clearly communicate in the written exam.

There will be a prize for the best answer and your work will contribute to a wall display in the drama classroom.

A level Music

During the pre-sixth you were taught how to start thinking about analysis. Please pick any piece of music and analyse it. Try and think of such things as:

  • structure
  • harmony (chords)
  • melody
  • instrumentation
  • rhythm

BTEC Music

Students must view two contrasting performances, either live or recorded. For each performance students must write a short review containing the grading criteria phrases used in the session.

Please choose 1 piece of music from your own personal record collection.

Identify and analyse the following components within the song:

  • Structure
  • Instrumentation
  • Rhythm
  • Melody
  • Harmony
  • Production Techniques

Music Technology

Please choose 2 pieces of music from your own personal music collection, 1 must be a studio recording and the 2nd piece must be a live recording.

1. Please identify the instruments that are performing in each song and make reference to how they are being played e.g.

• Electric Guitar – Strummed
• Drum Kit – playing a standard rock rhythm

2. Try to identify any production features that you can here on each instrument.

e.g.

• 1 instrument could be loud / quite in the mix
• reverb / acoustic used
• distortion on the guitars
• some instruments may appear from the left / right speaker
• any recognizable effects

Please bullet point all your answers
