Visual Impairment
At Blackpool Sixth Form College we promote equality of opportunity for the development of individual potential, regardless of individual differences and disability.
All support is specific to each individual, and before the student starts at College, meetings are held with the student to establish individual needs and preferences, so that provisions can be put in place as soon as possible. This also provides an opportunity for students to become familiar with the College layout.
Lessons
Tutors will be made aware of individual requirements and together we assess the best way for the learner to access his / her chosen lessons.
We have specialist IT facilities, including laptop computers with scanning and enlargement software for your personal use. A support assistant is available to make sure everything is in an accessible format. The computer can read text back to the learner.
Braille facilities would be made available if required. Texts can also be audio recorded by a support assistant if necessary. We have a CCTV for viewing text, and ‘Videoloups’ - hand-held magnifiers which plug into a TV, available for both home and college use. Enlarged photocopies of texts can also be provided, if preferred and relevant. Mobility assistance can be provided and outside agencies brought in if necessary.
Recreational / Enrichment Activities
Learners are encouraged to try a variety of recreational / enrichment activities in order to enjoy every aspect of College life. A recreation enrichment activity is compulsory for all Lower Sixth students. Negotiation would take place between the tutor of the chosen recreation, and the Head of Additional Support to ensure the activity can take place safely.
Lunch
Dedicated staff and students run a ‘friendly’ table throughout the lunch period. There are also buddy mentors who are students to meet up with to introduce learners to new friends and help them to settle in.
Independence Skills
If necessary, part of the Learning Agreement could involve developing independence skills including shopping, travelling and money management. To ensure the service continues to be successful support is reviewed:
- At the end of the Autumn Term
- At the end of each year
Counselling
The College offers a counselling service with a role to provide help and guidance to overcome any problems and difficulties that may occur throughout the academic year.
Progression
Learners will be helped to consider their next move forward. We provide:
- Accompanied careers interviews
- Accompanied visits to Universities / other institutions
- Help with applying for the DSA (disabled students allowance)
- Contact with disability officers at future establishments
- ‘Progression Statement’ which explains the level of support received, to help in planning for the future.
