Each student completes a 6-week paid internship, receives regular visits from Guru Lecturers and is assigned a Business Mentor from a local firm.

“I completed my Career Academy internship in August 2010 as a web developer at the Blackpool Victoria Hospital within the Communications Department. I found it beneficial to me as I gained first-hand experience of using the computer software and programs used in the hospital.” - Upper Sixth student Alvis Stengelis (formerly of Unity College)

If your organisation can offer support for our Careers Academy by offering internships or by being business mentors please contact our Work Placement Officer, Louise Logan, on 01253 307094 or email llogan@blackpoolsixth.ac.uk

What is the Career Academy programme?

The Career Academy is a two year programme for 16 to 19-year-olds supported by some of the biggest names in British business. Students joining the Blackpool Sixth Career Academy benefit from:

  • support for their learning, leading to national qualifications
  • a six-week paid internship with a local employer during the summer
  • special employer-led lectures, seminars and company visits
  • one-to-one mentoring by an experienced employee volunteer
  • networking opportunities with other Career Academy students around the UK.

What qualications do Career Academy students achieve?

The Career Academy curriculum is recognised as equivalent to three A levels, the Advanced Diploma or a combination of other national qualifications that enable students to progress on to Higher Education or into employment.

What are the benets of the programme?

Career Academies help young people achieve their full potential. Hand in hand with the qualifications and workplace experience, Career Academy students develop life skills - time management, interview techniques and public speaking.

Where do Career Academy students move on to?

The unique combination of classroom teaching and 'real' experience of the world of work shows students just where their studies can take them. Over 95% of graduates nationally go on to higher education, or an equivalent level of work related
training.

A Career Academy is hard work and it won’t suit everybody. You’ve got to be prepared to put in extra hours of study, live up to an employer’s expectations of its own employees and be ready to work as part of a team of like-minded young people. Your tutors will push you and have very high demands and expectations but the rewards are worth it.
