Partners in Business

As part of the college’s ongoing Careers Strategy, we aim to provide opportunities for our students linked to quality Careers, Education and Guidance so they can make informed decisions to plan for their futures.

‘Partner in Business’ Scheme

Partner in BusinessThe aim is that Blackpool Sixth students receive high quality Careers, Education and Guidance and have an opportunity to enhance their employability skills to enable them to make informed decisions about progressing into education, employment or training after completing their studies.

It is imperative that students leave Sixth Form in a strong position to successfully pursue their progression plans/career aims. A key element to this is students being paired with a “Partner In Business”. A mentor who can act as a role model, critical friend and advisor, inspiring students to achieve their full potential and employment potential.

So what is “Partner in Business” at Blackpool Sixth?

The ‘Partner in Business’ scheme is run by Blackpool Sixth to allow students the opportunity to link with local businesses and business people, to gain valuable experience and knowledge of the work place prior to them leaving Sixth Form. It will also provide these students with transferable skills including producing successful CVs, interview techniques and how to demonstrate using professional standards in the work place. All skills which are needed to succeed in the transition of college to work.

What does a Partner in Business need to do?

Time Commitment:
Communication with the student twice a term
This could be a one on one meeting organised in college or set up at the workplace. Maybe an email to the student to discuss progress and act as a support mechanism or help with the completion of the student log book.

Work Experience
We would like the student to experience first hand what the world of work can be like. This could be an internship over a holiday period or ‘a day in the life’ of discussion. It could also take form of an invitation to a staff development day.

Workshops
One workshop a year from the Partner in Business is delivered to a group of students to help build confidence and further enhance employability skills, including knowlegde as a career area.

Business mentor and studentAttendance at 2 meetings a year
One at the progression evening we hold at the Sixth Form and one meeting for the Partners in Business. The Progression evening will be a chance to interact with other students about ‘Business life.’

How can this benefit yourself and the student?

  • By acting as a mentor during this programme, it enables you as an employer to have links with local students from an “Outstanding College” - OFSTED 2009
  • Possible future opportunities for employment
  • Working with the Sixth Form to develop student’s skills professionally
