A Day in the Life

Hi, I’m Adam Bracewell!

Adam BracewellI am a former student of Highfield Humanities College, where I achieved 7 A*s, and an A at AS Level Religious Studies.

I am currently studying the International Baccalaureate Diploma. This means I study Chemistry, Biology, Maths, Psychology, English, French and Theory of Knowledge. I chose to study at Blackpool Sixth because it is the only state college in the area that offers the IB Diploma. I also liked the fact that studying here would allow me to be independent and to organise my study time effectively.

My day…

8.30am – Visit the FYI Express where I meet some friends and check my emails using FirstClass.

8.45am – In Psychology, we u ndertake our own psychological experiment. This allows me to implement what I have learnt in lessons so far into real life situations.

9.55am – During break, I go to the Common Room to meet up with friends.

10.15am - I have a directed study period where I can complete any additional work set outside of classes which takes the pressure off the amount of work to be completed at home.

11.30am - In my Chemistry lesson we are currently covering the topic of equilibrium. I find this topic particularly interesting, as the practicals involved are ref lective of real life processes.

12.45pm – Have lunch in the Common Room with my friends. I sometimes have work to complete so I go to the FYi or FYi Express.

13.30pm – In English we are currently working to produce an oral commentary on a book. I have chosen to do a monologue from ‘Enduring Love’ which I have particularly enjoyed.

14.45pm - Biology is my favourite lesson of the week as it is challenging and yet fun to learn and I intend to go to university to read Medicine after Sixth Form. One of the main reasons that I chose the IB Diploma was to set me apart from the majority of applicants who have opted for A Levels.

4pm – I am volunteer at Trinity Hospice as part of the Creativity, Action, Service element of the IB. This is just one of a number of extra curricular activities which I u ndertake. I have also been teaching Religion, Ethics and Philosopy to year 11 students at my former school, Highfield Humanities College.

Hi, my name is Amy Dutton

Amy DuttonBefore attending Blackpool Sixth I studied at Millfield Science and Performing Arts College where I achieved 4 A*s, 5 As and 3 Bs. Blackpool Sixth was the right choice for me due to the welcoming atmosphere I received from the various open days and also because I liked the idea of the independence I would gain whilst always feeling supported.

My day…

8.15am - Head straight to Starbucks with a few friends for a coffee to kick-start my system and visit the FYi to check my emails and print essential notes for the day ahead.

8.45am - My first lesson of the day is Classical Civilisation in which we have just finished a module about the collapse of the Roman Republic. This is a fantastic topic for me as I am always intrigued about how modern behaviour and attitudes compare to those who lived thousands of years ago.

10.15am - After break and a quick snack from the college shop I go to English Literature which I am deeply passionate about. It is perfect for combining a nalysis with creativity.

11.30am - Straight after this I have English Language. At the moment we are finishing original writing coursework in which I can truly apply my flare for creativity and adapt language for different audiences and different purposes.

12.45pm – Get some lunch and meet with my friends in the canteen.

13.30pm - Religion, Ethics and Philosophy is my next lesson in which we get to discuss and debate religious and deep philosophical questions that open your mind to new ideas.

14.45pm - My last lesson of the day, Critical thinking, asks us to analyse arguments and their effectiveness. This not only helps to strengthen my own arguments but also makes it easier to find the weakness in other peoples'.

Along with the subjects I study, Blackpool Sixth encourages us to undertake enrichment activities that give us a chance to try something new and help us in the step to university. I have just completed a basic course in sign language and now I’m currently visiting my old high school as an ambassador to help the students who are about to do their GCSEs.
