A World of Opportunities
Enjoying the whole Sixth Form experience. As a student at Blackpool Sixth, you will have the opportunity to explore a whole world of opportunities.
All our departments arrange visits to extend your knowledge beyond the classroom. Often these are exciting residentials where you get a chance to experience new aspects of the subject as well as having a great time. There is also a very extensive programme of “enrichment” which includes sports, recreational activities, work experience and one-off events.
Whatever you get involved in, you are certain to enjoy this important aspect of Sixth Form life.
International visits
In 2010/11 over 280 students took part in overseas visits to Holland, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Greece, Switzerland as part of their courses.

Athens and Delphi: Classic Civilisation students visited the landmarks of Athens and Delphi and were able to take part in a valuable excavation experience.

Berlin: Upper Sixth German students gather at the Brandenburg Gate during the annual Berlin visit. (The U6 at the Brandenburg gate in Berlin.

Barcelona: In June Business and Economics students visited Barcelona, Spain.

Paris: 30 Art & Design students from Blackpool Sixth ventured to Paris to experience the artistic culture of the beautiful French capital.
Team Inda
Seven current and former students of Blackpool Sixth and two members of staff spent 12 days on a “once in a lifetime experience” visit to Dharamsala, India, to develop a school in an area of deprivation. The expedition resulted in the team being awarded the Social Enterprise of the Year at the Hero Awards 2011.

During the visit the team helped to develop Dharamkot School in Dharamsala which has very poor facilities and its students face issues of poverty, illness and a lack of educational opportunities.
Young at Art Exhibition and Fashion show
The annual Young at Art Exhibition opened to the public in June 2011 with artwork from students studying Fine Art, Textiles, Fashion, Graphic Design and Photography on display to art and design lovers from the Fylde Coast and beyond.

Students Bethan Jones, Hannah Sycamore, Katie Hampson and Dan Davies were all offered exhibition space at The Gallery at the Wharf in Burscough as a result of the exhibition.

Performing Arts and Music Events
Blackpool Sixth continues to be the most exciting place in the area to study Performing Arts and Music.
Last year performances included the Autumn and Summer Music Concerts, Cabaret, Musicians of the Fylde at the White Church in Lytham St Annes, Pop Wannabe, Battle of the Bands, the Musical Theatre Showcase, a Variety Show, the Christmas Festival of Lessons and Carols and a musical tour of Holland.

Eco Silver Award
The Eco Action group contributed towards the Sixth Form gaining a Silver Award from Eco Schools by promoting the Eco Code, raising awareness about waste, energy consumption, fair trade and global poverty and by raising money for Oxfam.

National recognition for student magazine
In June 2011 the Blackpool Sixth student magazine achieved success in the Shine 2011: School Media Awards.

Upper Sixth students Abby Waylett, Jack McCafferty and Karen McCann receive the Shine Awards.
Blackpool Sixth Form’s student magazine team were awarded the Best Environmental Strategy Award and the Bronze Award for Best Overall entry to the national competition. The media industry judges commented that the Sixth Sense magazine was “a fine example of a pupil-led project” and they applauded the balanced environmental strategy, a successful commercial strategy, imaginative design, well-balanced and stimulating editorial and some highly creative artwork.
Careers Academy Success
Talented young employees of the future from Blackpool Sixth graduate from employer-backed Career Academy programme.

In May 2011, 18 Blackpool Sixth students attended a graduation ceremony in Leeds. The Career Academy boosts students’ employability skills by giving them real life experiences of the workplace.
Efforts for Charity
The Basketball Academy showed their support for people affected by the earthquake in Japan by playing ina 24 hour non-stop marathon which was opened by Blackpool FC coach Steve Thompson.

Science success
Three students from Blackpool Sixth have received awards from the British Biology Olympiad and Physicist Harrison Holt-McHale was awarded Lancashire Young Physicist of the Year. Emma Schulze achieved a Biology Olympiad Silver Award, Scott Wallace achieved a Bronze Award and Claire Sycamore was Highly Commended.
In July, Harrison was a part of a team of Sixth Form students that won the North West Big Bang Competition in Liverpool with a project in conjunction with BAE Systems on the Tornado GR4 and has also achieved a BA Gold Crest Award.

Triple Gold for Duke of Edinburgh at Blackpool Sixth
Five students from Blackpool Sixth have received Duke of Edinburgh Gold Awards with three of them being triplets Hannah, Rachel and Claire Sycamore. The Gold expedition took place in July with 30 students covering 80km in the remote highlands of Scotland. The expedition lasted 4 days and groups navigated their way unaided, carrying all their equipment and overcoming all obstacles the environment could throw at them.

Student Awards
Over 90 students were awarded for high achievements in their courses and success in extra-curricular activities such as sport, performing arts, enterprise and other contributions to the college community at the annual Student Awards Ceremony at the De Vere Hotel.

16 students received special awards at the ceremony including the Robert Platts Scholarship for Law, awarded to former St George’s School student Scott Wallace, and the University of Cambridge Award for Outstanding Achievement, received by former Lytham St Annes Technology and Performing Arts College student Stephanie Richards.
