Enterprise

It is recognised that ‘Enterprise Education’ is a term for an approach to learning and teaching that has evolved over recent years. The concept of enterprise in education continues to evolve.

Enterprise Education assists young people to become more enterprising in their approach to life and in particular work.It provides a focus on the development of entrepreneurship, and supports the learning of financial capability, employability skills and economic well being.

It encompasses core skills, employability skills, career education, work based/related learning and aspects of personal and social development.

Enterprise education motivates young people at all stages: as they see purpose and relevance in their college work to their future lives, young people are motivated and attain better. The enhanced currency of education through enterprise is as significant for those young people likely to be disaffected as for those performing well in school.

In the context of Blackpool, where the future of the community itself will rely on the enterprising and entrepreneurial attributes of its people, enterprise education is as much an economic imperative as an educational one. The College will provide opportunities for students to develop their skills in enterprise capability, financial literacy for all students with business and economic understanding.

College Wins Enterprise Award

The College has received national recognition for the excellence of its work in enterprise. We are the first college in the country to be given the prestigious Excellence in Enterprise Education award from the Centre for Education and Industry at Warwick University. The assessors were  particularly impressed by the extremely wide scope of enterprise activities in the College and the achievements of students taking part in them.

In the first term of 2008-9 over 500 students took part in enterprise-based activities. Some of the highlights include: tutor groups raising a staggering £825 for Children in Need and a group of students attending a national conference for young entrepreneurs.

Enterprise Records

Enterprise Records have produced their first Enterprise CD raising funds for the department as part of sustaining Enterprising skills and looks at students dealing with working life through music.  The group successfully won a contract with the Blackpool's Male Voice Choir and edited a CD for them, designing the layout and the artwork from the Graphic department.  The next project will be to encourage school music groups to use the facility and have them produce CD's to sell in their own shops in School as part of a drive to get schools doing more Enterprise activities also and to raise awareness of industry and the facilities at the College.

Every Child Matters

Health and Social Care students take inspiration from the Dare to Care campaign last year that saw College look at disaffected areas and try and raise heathy eating and exercise.  The group have taken on Every Child Matters working on workshops that take Grange Park Sure Start through the 5 elements of the initiative.  They have worked on Healthy Eating to Being Safe and even looked at raising awareness of Economic Well-being by showing different job opportunities through role play in the local Community.  They are planning to hit the schools with a series of workshops dealing with the same issues in the New Year and have already successfully organised a placement.

HERO Awards 2008 - Our Enterprise Heroes

The Blackpool Colleges and Schools have worked hard over the last year to develop Enterprise. This was highlighted in the HERO awards in June and saw students come together to celebrate their success. The theme was Hollywood style and students pulled out all the stops for the evening. Sixth Form students were high profile on the night winning the “Most Enterprising Student” award for their Images Photography business set up as an extra curricular activity, now getting funding through the Prince’s Trust; while students who took part in the Enterprise Project “Dare to Care” won “Best Social Enterprise” award having worked with pupils in local schools to highlight healthy living.
