COURSE oVERVIEW
A dynamic and energising course, sport and exercise sciences will prepare you for careers in sports. You will study a variety of units ranging from the study of skill acquisition to sports injury management.

Two grade 4s in GCSE combined science or grade 4 in GCSE Biology.

- What will I study?
The following units are covered in this course:
- Functional Anatomy
- Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology
- Coaching for Performance and Fitness
- Biomechanics in Sport and Exercise Science
- Equipment and Financial contributions
A range of textbooks and other relevant publications are available in the FYi or departmental resource area. Subscription to appropriate periodicals is also available through the department. There are also a range of revision guides available through Amazon and students will be directed to these once on the course/ appropriate unit(s)
There are day visits included as part of the course in which students are encouraged to participate. These may incur a cost to cover transport and entrance to the visited organisation. In total, the estimated cost of these essential visits over the two years of the course will be approximately £100. There may be other desirable educational visits that students can access during the two-year course.
Any student undertaking work experience with young children or vulnerable adults may need a DBS check to go out on a work placement. The cost of the DBS check is currently £38. Payment is made when students bring in the completed DBS form and evidence of identity to the Student Finance Office.
Students will be expected to purchase a Blackpool Sixth sports kit, polo shirt and training top to be worn during practical sessions, leadership activities and work experience, approximate cost £45. (essential bundle)
- Field trips, projects and employability opportunities
You will visit a number of local universities where you will use the latest sports science equipment as part of your studies, getting you familiar with equipment and experimental procedures that can be used in the industry and university straight after college. We have strong links with Blackpool FC, Fleetwood Town FC and Fylde Rugby Club as well as local sports centres and coaches. Students on this course also have the opportunity to take an additional qualification in sports leadership (Community Sports Leaders).
Where does it lead?
All industries in sport including but not limited to: sports journalism, sports scientist, match analyst, sports therapy, physiotherapy. Students that study this course are often successful in achieving placements on physiotherapy courses at university, courses that receive 600 applicants for 30 spaces.
