‘Layton’s Hidden Garden’ opens in Blackpool to create a community green space

A new community garden space 'Layton’s Hidden Garden' has been created at Layton Library in Blackpool for the use of local residents and library visitors and was officially opened on Wednesday 21st August.

The idea behind the project was to make the hidden space behind Layton library usable and accessible as some residents in the local area do not have their own garden or green space.

Visitors can sign up to be a volunteer and help with the garden or simply come and sit with a book, just relax and enjoy the space.

The garden was provided with beautiful artwork and illustrations from the  Blackpool Sixth Students. The students from the Triple Art & Design course have worked very hard on creating a fun, vibrant art piece that sits well in the garden. The students designed and painted two large murals while enjoying the team building experience.

Cllr John Boughton, Chair of the committee, said: “This is a wonderful open green space. I am sure that many people will get a lot of pleasure using it. A big thanks goes out to everyone who was involved in making this project happen so that visitors to the library and local community have a pleasant new hidden garden.”

Jane Berry, Library Manager, said "This new green space also means the library will be able to provide even more activities including outdoor story time for our younger residents which is not only fun for the children but reading and being read too is hugely beneficial for their emotional wellbeing and their language development skills. It has been a joy having the Blackpool Sixth students involved in this project and they should be very proud of themselves. The walls get complimented all the time”
