COURSE OVERVIEW
This is the ideal course for post-16 students with an interest in supporting children aged 0-8 years old within the health or education sectors whilst gaining a firm knowledge foundation, understanding childhood development and safeguarding. The course has been developed in conjunction with the early years community so the curriculum reflects current early years practice within the industry.

How will I be taught?
The underpinning theory will be delivered within the classroom, assessments, coursework, workshops and presentations. There will be some theory cross-cover between all units throughout the 2-year course.

Our teaching staff maintain strong industry connections with local employers to ensure their knowledge base remains current. These connections have strengthened work experience opportunities.
Additionally, many of our teachers also conduct examination assessments for multiple qualifications by Pearson. This enhances the delivery of learning within the classroom as it provides our teachers with a deeper understanding of exam requirements and grading criteria.

These skills will be fully embedded into the content and assessments of the course and are important for further higher education or industry opportunities.
How will I be assessed?
The assessments for this course are provided by external examination (50% weighting) and internal coursework (50% weighting). All assessments contribute evenly to your overall mark. Unit 1 (exam) and Unit 3 (coursework) will be taught during your first year of study and Unit 2 (exam) and Unit 4 (coursework) will be taught in your final year of study. External examinations are undertaken on college premises in exam conditions and marked externally. Examinations are scheduled to be taken in January of each study of year.

- What will I study
Over the 2 year course, you will complete the following 4 mandatory units:
- Unit 1 – Children’s Development
- Unit 2 – Keeping Children Safe
- Unit 3 – Play and Learning
- Unit 4 – Research and Reflective Practice in an Early Childhood Setting
On completion, the course is equivalent to one A Level. Students will be required to study another two subjects alongside this course.
The following subjects complement the taught theory of the AAQ ECD: – Sociology – Psychology – Biology – English
- Equipment and Financial contributions
To attend placements, students must: complete an enhanced DBS (A pre-existing enhanced DBS check may be accepted providing it is registered on the update service) and wear a branded college polo shirt. These costs must be covered by the student.
- Field trips, projects and employability opportunities
Work placement opportunities will be available within the 2nd year of study, locations may include (but are not limited to): – Nursery – Primary School – Work placement opportunities will depend upon approval from other studied subjects
Where does it lead?
A level 3 AAQ is equivalent to an A level and may be used as evidence for university courses or employment within the following fields:
