COURSE OVERVIEW

BTEC IT includes practical tasks and theory, incorporating a wide range of topics including spreadsheets, social media and database design. The course opens the door to careers in IT and business.

UCAS Points for Vocational Qualifications

Vocational courses are offered in different "sizes" equivalent to one, two, or three A Levels in terms of UCAS points.

Single: Equivalent to one A Level (maximum 56 UCAS points)
Double: Equivalent to two A Levels (maximum 112 UCAS points)
Triple: Equivalent to three A Levels (maximum 168 UCAS points)

Points for Single BTEC/CTEC:

Grade | UCAS Points

Distinction* (D*) | 56
Distinction (D) | 48
Merit (M) | 32
Pass (P) | 16

For Double and Triple awards, add the points for each grade to get the total (e.g. D* (56) + D (48) + M (32) = 136 UCAS points).

Why study BTEC IT (DOUBLE) at Blackpool Sixth?

We use ‘live’ scenarios, raising funds for charities, incorporating work experience both virtually and in the local area. Ideal for entry into the workplace or university. Trips to Business & IT Live at Disneyland Paris and New York are highlights of the year.

How will I be taught?

A combination of teacher delivery, group work and independent learning.
This subject has a dedicated website that provides the students with essential resources for the whole course.

For externally assessed units you will have mock exams and frequent revision tasks throughout the year. There will be practice tasks incorporated throughout the learning process so you are ready for the formal assessment. All course resources are available online and full access to GSuite and Google Classroom is embedded in the delivery and assessment of the course.

What skills will I develop?

  • Teamwork: groups are often asked to work on group tasks together promoting collaborative learning.
  • Employability skills: developed through learning how to use industry standard software such as EXCEL Spreadsheets and ACCESS Databases
  • Written communication: there are a variety of ways that assignments are produced, one of the main ones being typed assignments. Students are advised to bring in their own devices.
  • Research skills: you will develop research skills through tasks that will involve doing group or independent revision using the internet. You will learn how to reference sources of information correctly.
  • Information technology: in addition to being taught how to use different pieces of software for different purposes, you will also use Cloud Technologies for producing and submitting coursework and accessing IoT.

Over the two years students will be assessed both externally and internally for the following units:

Unit 1: Information Technology Systems (Written External Examination)
Unit 2: Creating Systems to Manage Information (Database Controlled External Assessment)
Unit 3: Using Social Media in Business (Internally Assessed)
Unit 4 Programming. (Internally Assessed)
Unit 5: Data Modelling (Internally Assessed)
Unit 8: Computer Games Development (Internally Assessed)
Unit 9: IT Project Management (Internally Assessed)
Unit 11: Cyber Security and Incident Management (Controlled External Assessment)

What will you study and other information about BTEC Level 3 IT (Single)

Where does it lead?

Our students progress into a wide variety of further study or employment options. We have had students going into apprenticeships such as marketing and social media for the Winter Gardens Blackpool, Civil Service, Victrex and BAE. One student has gone on to study at an American University and is now a member of staff at Blackpool Sixth Form. We also have students going to university to study courses such as systems and networking, website design and game development. Opportunities for Higher level apprenticeships in Cybersecurity is a growing sector in the North West and several students have applied for this sector of employment recently.
