BTEC Level 2 Certificate: Creative Skills (Art, Design & Media)
COURSE OVERVIEW
The Extended Certificate, equivalent to two GCSEs, is for students who are looking to study a creative subject (art, design and media) as part of a one-year course alongside other areas of study. It will be taken alongside other BTECs or GCSEs, and supports progression to Level 3 study in art and design or Film and TV. It can also provide fundamental creative skills that are valued in other subject areas, or support progression to an apprenticeship in art and design or a related sector.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
To join this programme you will need 4 GCSEs at grade 3 (or equivalent). One of either English language or maths needs to be at least a grade 3 whilst the other needs to be no less than a grade 2.

How will I be taught?
- This is a highly practical course and you will be taught in specialist design studios.
- This course is broken down into 2 major units which will be taught and completed over the year.
- You will work closely with other students and in addition to being guided by your teacher you will peer assess and peer teach one another.
- All work will be produced, stored and submitted digitally via Google Drive.

- What will I study?
Module A1 – Exploring and developing creative skills
Introduction to various digital and studio-based creative skills such as:
- Drawing
- Painting
- Photography
- Textiles processes
- Basic image manipulation and digital editing
- Basic animation
Module A2 – Extending personal creative skills
Developing a response to a theme, generating practical informed work that concludes in creative personal outcomes.
Module B1 – Personal Development
This assesses professional standards and wider transferable skills needed in employment.
This also supports decision-making about progression.
- Equipment and Financial contributions
You may need to contribute to practical equipment such as sketchbooks, basic art equipment and additional printing needs. Financial support may be available for bursary students.
- Field trips, projects, and employability opportunities
You will be encouraged to seek work experience as part of the course. Guest speakers are routinely invited into college for example the British Board of Film Classification.
Where does it lead?
Supports progression to Level 3 study in Art and Design, Fashion Design, Marketing and Branding, and Creative Media (Film and TV) However, the skills learned in this course will help prepare you for a wide variety of further study or access to employment.
