Our A Level German course will broaden and deepen your knowledge of the German language. It is an exciting chance to develop a wide range of skills through a broad range of specialised and detailed insights into the culture, society and history of both modern Germany and the wider German-speaking world.

Standard college entry requirements plus a grade 5 in GCSE German is essential.

Teacher expertise
A keen linguist, your German teacher is a native speaker and has a wide and varied experience of teaching. Your teacher approaches her subject in an enthusiastic, empathetic and supportive way. She uses a range of authentic and up-to-date materials such as art, music, articles and films, together with Additional Support Tutorials and regular opportunities for independent research to provide full immersion in the subject.

What will you study and other information about Subject A-Level
- What will I study?
- Aspects of German-speaking society: current trends: the changing nature of the family, the digital world and youth culture.
- Artistic culture in the German-speaking world: festivals and traditions, art and architecture and the history of Berlin’s culture.
- Aspects of German-speaking society and current issues: multiculturalism, immigration, integration and racism
- Aspects of political life in the German-speaking world: Germany and the EU, youth and politics, reunification and its consequences
- One film (currently Goodbye Lenin)
- One work of literature (currently Der Vorleser by Bernhard Schlink)
- An independent research project on a topic of interest to you and which is related to Germany or a country where German is spoken
- Field trips, projects and employability opportunities
The AQA A-Level German course includes an Individual Research Project (IRP) which enables students to investigate an area of German/German-speaking culture or history of personal interest to them and to develop their independent study skills.
Learning German can open up a host of UK and international study and employment opportunities. The ability to communicate in a second language and the confidence and communication skills that this brings make language students highly employable.
- Equipment
AQA AS/A2 grammar book £10.99 is useful and all students also have full access to Kerboodle online. You will need to have your own copy of the Literature text and recommended Study Guides for A-level German
. We are also on the technology for learning scheme so you will need to have access to a device to enable you to work collaboratively in class and access a range of digital resources.
Lower Sixth: Modern Foreign Language (MFL) students are recommended to purchase the official AQA Grammar and translation Workbook for £10.99
Upper Sixth: all second year MFL students are required to purchase a novel for their chosen language which will be confirmed at the end of year 1
