COURSE oVERVIEW
This T Level in Digital Support and Security is an excellent pathway for students eyeing a career in IT infrastructure, support services, or cybersecurity. It balances theoretical learning with practical experience and prepares learners for both employment and further technical education.
The digital sector in the UK is thriving and currently contributes over £151 billion to the UK economy. Our local area of Lancashire has also seen major investment in becoming a digital hub with the development of the North Atlantic Loop, which is set to open up more lucrative job opportunities over the upcoming years. The T Level in Digital Support and Security will allow you to work with businesses in the digital sector and understand and learn the real skills that are required to actively work within this growing sector in the future.

Standard college entry requirements plus both GCSE English Language and GCSE Maths at at least grade 4.

With this in mind, the development of digital skills is vital. By studying this course, you will be taught in our purpose-built Digital Lab/Suite using the latest technology to understand how the digital world is evolving and how this impacts on businesses in the 21st century. You will work with a host of our amazing business partners who will support you in developing the skills to use within a real-life business setting.
The course will allow you to think innovatively and bring in your own knowledge and skills to further develop your understanding of the digital world. You will have the opportunity to work on real-life digital problems faced by businesses and work on solutions to fix them.
How will I be taught?
During your time studying on the Digital T Level course, you will spend 80% of your time in the classroom and 20% of your time in the workplace. In Year 1, you will spend the majority of your time in the classroom where you will take advantage of our purpose built digital suite to learn the key content that employers want you to know and understand to work within the digital sector. You will take part in employer talks, online workshops and project based tasks to further your understanding.
In year 2, you will take part in 415 hours of work experience. We have developed strong relationships with local companies such as Victrex, Blackpool and Wyre Council, NHS and many more that will help you develop your digital skills further and work your way towards a career within this growing sector.
Teacher expertise
You will be taught by a range of business and digital experts who have developed their skills through engaging with industry professionals. These skills include being able to code in multiple languages including Python, C# and Visual Basic and working within small and medium sized businesses including setting up and running start ups.
What skills will I develop?
- Digital Skills – you will use and understand the importance of emerging technology and how businesses are impacted by this. You will develop the digital skills to use a host of different hardware and software/applications that are required to design, implement, fix and evolve the digital environment within a business.
- Critical thinking and problem solving: within the course, you will be given the opportunity to use your own skills to solve digital problems faced by businesses. These can include how to install hardware and software to fix tech based issues with the digital environment.
- Teamwork: you will be expected to work collaboratively to understand the key content and work in groups on small projects with lessons to improve your understanding of the content.
- Application skills: you will be able to use the content and skills developed on the course and put them into practice on your work experience placement.
- Remote learning/Independent study: whilst on your work placement, you will develop your ability to work remotely from other locations to access course content and complete assessments. You will also be attending remote meetings to assess your performance whilst on placement.
- Written communication: there are a variety of ways that assignments are handed in, one of the main ones being typed assignments.
- Research skills: you will develop research skills through group tasks that will involve using the internet. You will use this evidence to apply to your projects and assessments.
How will I be assessed?
Your final grade (Pass, Merit, Distinction) comes from:
- Exams (to test your core knowledge)
- An employer-set project (solving a real digital problem)
- Assessments in your chosen specialism
Year 1 Assessments:
Two written exams testing the core content of the course.
An employer set a project to be completed in college.
Year 2 Assessment:
Completion of 315 hours (45 days) of work experience within the digital sector.
Completion of an occupational specialism project (Digital Support).

- Equipment and Financial contributions
While Blackpool Sixth provides access to state-of-the-art facilities and equipment for the T Level in Digital Support and Security, students are encouraged to have access to certain personal equipment to enhance their learning experience:
- A Windows laptop with a minimum of 4GB of RAM (not a MacBook): A personal device with internet access to complete coursework, research, and participate in online learning platforms.
- Software Tools: Students may be required to install specific software for coursework and projects. Details will be provided at the start of the course.
- Textbooks: The core textbook for the course is the Hodder T Level in Digital Support Services. A link to purchase this will be provided upon enrolment.
These resources are integrated into the curriculum to enhance learning and provide students with the skills needed to excel in the digital sector.
While Blackpool Sixth strives to minimise additional costs, there are some financial contributions students may need to consider:
Optional Educational Visits: Throughout the two-year course, there may be opportunities to participate in non-essential educational visits, such as trips to universities, conferences, and businesses. Participation in these visits is optional and may require additional costs.
Industry Placement Expenses: Students are required to complete a minimum of 315 hours of work experience in Year 2. While the college coordinates these placements, students may incur costs related to travel or other expenses associated with their placements.
We offer a range of financial support to eligible students, which may include assistance with meals, transport, and course-related costs. The level of support is based on household financial circumstances.

- Projects and Practical Experience
- Work with the college’s own Student Tech Support Team, where you help resolve technical issues around campus, under the supervision of Blackpool Sixth Form.
- Join the Digital Academy, where you can explore coding further, experiment with software tools, and push your technical skills
- The Employer-Set Project in Year 1 will challenge you to solve real-world IT and digital problems designed with employers
- Cyber security simulation tasks such as investigating mock security breaches, analysing threats, and designing protective measures
